A Note on African Names

Livingstone’s spellings of Bantu-speaking ethic groups reflect the structure of the languages spoken in these regions. For example, the prefixes “ba,” “ma,” and “ama” refer to a group whereas “se” and “isi” refer to the language. The baTswana (whom Livingstone refers to as the “Bechuana” or “Becuana”) speak seTswana (spelled “Sechuana” in nineteenth-century grammars and dictionaries). When regularizing the names of northern Bantu-speaking peoples, Livingstone Online tends to remove the prefix, hence the “Makololo” who accompanied Livingstone are referred to as Kololo in the supporting critical essays.
